Hope you are doing well.
I have been thinking for a while, why should a ‘Jack-of-all-trades’ (so to speak) have to be a master of none?
Why can’t he or she be a master of many as well?
You see, mastery is not knowing everything there is to something
It’s not absolute perfection (as there is no such thing)
Mastery is being able to do, know and if possible, teach something better than a large percentage of people around us (at least, that’s how I’ve seen it)
For years, I have been researching, and trying to unravel the mysteries of life, health, success and many other areas.
Yes it is true that one can not be an ‘ultimate authority’ being more of a generalist, but I believe that anyone can know a heck of a lot about a lot of things.
A true Polymath, like DaVinci, Ben Franklin and a few others probably put aside any inhibitions or societal expectation to ‘specialise’ or ‘be an expert’ in one area
Rather, they excelled in a multitude of areas and brought skills and creativity from one area to another.
I personally believe that one doesn’t have to be an expert on one subject only.
If you love a variety of subjects, but can go deep into each of them for a period of time and achieve a level of knowledge and a capacity to ‘do’ something positive with that knowledge, you can be on that path to ‘mastery’ in multiple disciplines.
Looking at it from another angle, I believe that most if not all entrepreneurs are polymaths in disguise.
Entrepreneurs delve deep into, learn and implement various skills and tasks in the process of building and growing businesses.
Modern examples of people who have achieved some degree of mastery and so can serve a varied audience are people like Eben Pagan, Brendon Burchard, Tony Robbins (at least in the marketing/personal development/peak performance arena)
I think that the ‘you need to specialise in one thing’ conditioning can set some of us up for failure.
Personally, I’ve been a general-specialist all my life
From a young age, I’ve had varied interests and have devoted blocks of time to get very deep, learn the theories and test them and then move on to other areas
People when talking to me are surprised that I can talk about a variety of subjects and give actionable steps to achieve results in those areas.
Because of this, I have had to look at ways to not sound like a know-it-all, because I know that there are lots of areas that I don’t know anything about, nor do I have much interest in
As long as we know what we know a lot about, and are constantly learning, testing and growing in those areas, we can be Masters-Of-Many as well.
Take some time (right now before you forget) to write down your interests, what you have achieved with them and how you have (or have attempted to) help others with this knowledge.
You’ve done that? Good . . .
So now you can see a few areas where you know more (and maybe even achieved more) than most people around you.
Look at your bookshelf and computer hard drive, to see how much information you have regarding each of these topics
Good, so now that you have done that (you have haven’t you?)
How much of that have you consumed, studied (not just read – there is a big difference between reading and studying), and implemented in your life?
You can now look at ways to become better at these areas by teaching or helping others.
There is no better way to learn, that teaching yourself, testing, tweaking and then teaching others.
By doing these steps, you would have realised that you know quite a lot, and have a lot to offer to you fellow men (and women).
By going through the process of learning, implementing, testing, tweaking and then teaching
In any area
You are on the path to mastery.
And over a period of time,
When you keep doing this in the various areas that you have a lot of interest in
You can become a Master-Of-Many
All the very best, and let no one tell you that you can not become a Master-Of-Many
I think it’s time to throw the ‘Jack-of-all trades, is the master of none’ crap into the bin 😉
Have a fantastic day.
If you liked this, and it has opened your eyes to see yourself in a different light
if you don’t agree with my view
You think I could present this better
