If you have even tried to start a business, or progress in a career, you would have by now realised that there is no true ‘Work-Life Balance’.
I’ve spent a considerable time learning about some of the top entrepreneurs (Sir Richard Branson, Bill Gates and many others), and the common theme is that they work a lot more than is given credit for.
Most people trying to build their online business come into it with the dream of the lifestyle business.
Now, I’m NOT saying that there aren’t lifestyle benefits, if you know how to Engineer Your Business,
It doesn’t happen overnight.
If you watch the documentary about Bill Gates’ early days, he hardly ever slept, and when he did, it was under the desk in his office.
I’ve heard fairly similar stories about Steve Jobs as well.
Then where do we get this delusion of being able to just spend a few minutes a day to make tens of thousands of dollars a month?
Look, I’m not saying you’re stupid
I fell for the same crap
I was willing to ‘suspend reality’ for a while, till my real world experience of working with real businesses made me realise
‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’
There will come a time when you can spend a few minutes a day on the business and make a truck load of money
That day will come after months, if not years of hard work initially
Yes, I said the BAD word – HARD WORK
It takes HARD WORK to learn the various skills required to build a business
You are going to work the 60 – 100 hr weeks (especially if you are doing this part time as you’ll be working 40hrs at the day job)
Suck it up, harden up and get on with it
Do something that you will love and enjoy spending those 60+ hour weeks on
Sooner or later you are going to want to pull your hair out
Or even just quit
I’ve spent years immersed in business, marketing, psychology, fitness and engineering books
Not just learning
But actually using it in various parts of my life and in my day job
I know what I’m passionate about and enjoy
Look around you
What do you surround yourself with?
Look at ways to monetise that knowledge
When you do what you love and make money doing it
It will feel like you’re not working at all
This is true work-life balance
Not the crap that is promoted by everyone and their dog
“work 40 hrs a week to enjoy the weekend and vacations”
I work the 40+ hr day job to build my own business that I am passionate about (working on it early in the morning, late at night and over the weekends)
Not to ‘enjoy’ the weekend on trivial things that don’t matter
I work on the weekends now, to be able to have a better life tomorrow (and give my family a better life, and more of my time)
At the end of the day, I don’t see the point in working to build someone else’s dream (in the long term)
But think we need to be building assets that bring in income passively, and that can be passed on to future generations (Businesses that are not dependent on you, real estate investing etc)
Start ‘Minding Your Business’ as Robert Kiyosaki calls it
Find something that interests you or you’re passionate about
Because you are going to be thinking about it and working on it 24/7/365 🙂
Build a business around it
Then you won’t be worrying about ‘Work-Life Balance’
Your work is going to be part or your life and vice-versa
Have you started ‘Minding Your Own Business’?
Or have you bought into the ‘Work-Life Balance’ myth like 90% of the population?
